Leadership Notes

  1. Well, here we are—just a little more than two weeks away from Farm Science Review. Buckeye football season is about to kick off, and we’re heading into the final stretch of county fair season. I find myself wondering where the year has gone.

  2. Eric Barrett has been named assistant dean of OSU Extension and associate chair for the Department of Extension – effective Sept. 1, 2025, through June 30, 2029.

  3. Extension’s Administrative Cabinet is hosting Regional Conversations in November. It is important that every Extension professional register for and attend one of five dates we’ve set aside to have these important conversations.

College Connections

  1. The 2025 Farm Science Review will be Sept. 16-18 at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London. Typically, more than 100,000 people attend this iconic three-day farm show that features exhibitors, educational displays and demonstrations.

  2. Extension, SENR, and the Department of Art at Ohio State Mansfield will host a Cyanotype Workshop on Sept. 4 (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), a class that combines art and nature.

  3. The next Ohio Plant Diagnostic Workshop will be Sept. 5 at the Secrest Arboretum in Wooster. Join faculty and staff from CFAES and Extension for this in-person learning opportunity that will feature industry speakers, hands-on diagnostics, and a diagnostic walk through the arboretum.

  4. The Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics has recently updated its Economic Outlook and Policy Webinar Series and released several new bulletins.

Campus Connections/Partnerships

  1. The Ohio Regional Tick Symposium will be Oct. 27 (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus.

  2. The Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge (ERIK) is formalizing the Sponsored Programs proposal submission timelines and requirements.

Community Connections

  1. There will be an Egg Industry Issues Form Sept. 10-11 in Columbus. The Egg Industry Issues Forum is an annual education and outreach event organized and facilitated by the Egg Industry Center.

Programming Perspectives

  1. There will be a Pancakes with Pollinators workshop on Sept. 3 (12-1:30 p.m.) at Ohio State Mansfield. Come learn about pollinator habitat along Ohio’s utility rights-of-ways, native bees and butterflies, and more.

  2. The 2025 eBarns report is now available and features a summary of 30 research studies that were organized at 101 individual research sites—representing 26 Ohio counties.

  3. Extension professionals who want to offer chainsaw safety training in their respective counties should plan to attend Chainsaw Safety Train-the-Trainer events this fall.

Operations/Business of Extension

  1. The next Extension Marketing Meetup will be on Sept. 3 (1:30-2:30 p.m.). We will talk about how to ensure that all marketing pieces have a clear call to action. This will take 10-15 minutes, and then we will open the meeting for any brand or marketing questions attendees have.

  2. Whether you’re new to Extension or have been with the organization for a while, it is important to learn how to navigate Adobe Express to help with marketing efforts.

  3. If your office is moving locations or planning a general office cleanup, consider reaching out to Ohio State’s Recycling and Refuse Services team. They can provide extra capacity for recyclable items—including paper, file folders, books (hard and soft cover), cardboard, magazines, journals,

Celebrating Colleagues

  1. In late July, Jason Cervenec, education and engagement director and research scientist for the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, and Lydia Ulry Extension educator, joined National 4-H's Meet the Author Webinar.

Professional Development Opportunities

  1. Dismantling the Imposter Narrative: Banishing Self-Doubt and Embracing Sucess Workshop, a virtual workshop, will be Sept. 10 (10 a.m.-12 p.m.). If you struggle with imposter syndrome and are ready to unpack the roots of self-doubt, this workshop is for you.

  2. There will be an Agricultural Law In-Service on Sept. 11 (8:30 a.m.- 4p.m.) in Plain City. Come learn about current legal and farm management issues from members of Extension’s Ag Law and Farm Office teams—including how to handle legal questions from clientele, farm transition planning, farmland

  3. The JCEP Global Relations Committee will offer a GlobalOHIO Immersion Learning Tour Oct. 16-17 in Toledo. The day will feature immersive cultural learning opportunities—including a tour of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, and the Hirzel Canning Company and Farms.

Health and Wellness

  1. The Live Healthy Live Well team recently shared tips on safe cleaning practices—for both you and your home. Keeping a clean home is important for a healthy environment, but cleaning safely matters just as much.

  2. Caring for your own health as much as you care for your family’s is the key to a balanced lifestyle — and to looking after your loved ones. The Sports Medicine team at the Wexner Medical Center understands the importance of staying active, whether you’re an athlete or adult wanting to stay
